50 Years of Helping People with Vision Loss See More, Do More, and Live Better
For more than 50 years, Low Vision Specialists of Maryland & Virginia has focused on a mission often overlooked in traditional eye care: helping people with permanent vision loss make the most of the vision they still have.
While many eye conditions cannot be reversed, functional vision can often be improved. That distinction has guided our work for decades.
Today, patients from throughout Maryland, Virginia, and surrounding states travel to our practice after being told that nothing more can be done for their vision. Many arrive feeling discouraged after seeing multiple doctors without meaningful improvement. What they discover is that low vision care is not about curing disease — it is about restoring function, independence, and confidence.
Specialized Care for Macular Degeneration and Stroke-Related Vision Loss
Our practice has become a regional authority and destination for individuals living with:
- Macular degeneration (dry and wet)
- Vision loss following stroke or traumatic brain injury
- Stargardt disease and inherited retinal conditions
- Albinism and complex visual processing challenges
Macular degeneration remains one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 60. Stroke-related visual field loss affects an estimated one-third of stroke survivors. Despite how common these conditions are, many patients are never informed that low vision rehabilitation exists.
Traditional eye care is excellent at diagnosing and managing disease. But patients with permanent vision loss are often left without guidance on how to function day to day. Low vision care exists to fill that gap.
What Makes Advanced Low Vision Care Different?
Unlike routine eye exams that focus primarily on eye health or visual acuity, low vision evaluations center on real-life goals:
- Reading again
- Recognizing faces
- Watching television
- Using phones, tablets, and computers
- Navigating safely and confidently
Our doctors — Dr. Thomas Azman, Dr. Donna Glenn, Dr. Kimberly Deugwillo, and Dr. Assif Kasmani — bring decades of combined experience in helping patients maximize usable vision. Every evaluation is comprehensive and individualized, focused on what the patient wants to be able to do.
While outcomes vary depending on diagnosis and severity, the majority of patients experience meaningful functional improvement. Families often report renewed independence, reduced caregiver burden, and a return to activities that once felt lost.
Low Vision Is Often Overlooked — But It Shouldn’t Be
Low vision rehabilitation remains one of the most underutilized areas of eye care. Many patients are simply told to “adjust” to vision loss without being offered specialized solutions designed specifically for functional improvement.
We believe patients deserve more than reassurance. They deserve informed options.
After five decades of dedicated low vision care, our mission remains the same: help patients see more clearly, live more independently, and regain confidence in their daily lives.
