TIMONIUM, MD., October 29th, 2019 —

In its ongoing support of people with sight loss, Low Vision Specialists of Maryland and Virginia (LVS) is sponsoring the Blind Poet 2019 American Tour, which brings Dave Steele—an award-winning poet, author, public speaker, singer, and advocate for the blind—from Manchester, UK, to major US east coast cities, including New York, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.

In the greater Baltimore area, Steele will share his powerful poetry and sight-loss journey at the following events:

  • October 29, Greater Baltimore Sight-Loss Support Group, Timonium, Maryland
  • November 7, Maryland Department of Rehabilitation Services Conference 2019, Towson, Maryland, as keynote speaker
  • November 8–10, 2019 National Federation of the Blind of Maryland State Convention, Baltimore, Maryland

Over the past three years, Steele lost the majority of his vision to retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a hereditary degenerative condition that has no treatment or cure. During that time, the husband and father of four channeled the frustration of losing his sight and livelihood into poetry as therapy and re-engineered his life. His three-volume poetry collection entitled Stand By Me RP gained worldwide attention with both international blindness organizations and RP social media support groups, becoming the number one best-selling poetry series on three continents.

“Even before my diagnosis of RP, I believed in the power of music and poetry to touch our hearts and heal our souls,” said Steele, aka the Blind Poet. “I hope my poems continue to reach those who struggle with sight loss and help friends and family better understand the challenges of life with RP. I strive to raise awareness and erase misconceptions surrounding retinal diseases, such as the belief by some that people with RP don’t look blind.”

“Through poetry and songs forged by his journey toward blindness, Dave gives a powerful voice to those facing isolation from retinitis pigmentosa and other sight-loss conditions,” said Bari Azman, vice president of marketing and technology at LVS. “We are beyond proud to sponsor Dave’s first American book tour and further his mission to connect with the sight-loss community. Dave’s tour not only bears witness to the realities of living with sight loss and blindness but also calls attention to how technology, navigational support, and wayfinding systems can enhance vision, improve quality of life, and increase independence.”
