SUNU BAND SMARTWATCH REPLICATES DOLPHIN NAVIGATION TECHNIQUES TO GUIDE VISUALLY IMPAIRED USERS AROUND OBSTACLES IN PUBLIC SPACES
Low Vision Specialists of Maryland & Virginia distributes Sunu Band that gives visually impaired a “sixth sense”

Low Vision Specialists of Maryland & Virginia have announced a distribution agreement with the manufacturers of Sunu Band, a navigation smartwatch that guides the visually impaired around obstacles in public spaces using sonar and haptic feedback. It replicates the navigation techniques employed by bats and dolphins and compliments the white cane and/or guide dog.

The Sunu Band Smartwatch (Sonar Watch) enables the visually impaired to sense objects and obstacles in their way that may impede their progress and/or cause bodily injury. By emitting high-frequency sound waves (sonar) that bounce off objects up to 16 feet ahead, Sunu Band can detect objects like tree branches hanging over a sidewalk or people in a rush-hour crowd, thereby reducing injury to the body, chest, arms and head. It can also guide the user to a particular office in a crowded office building. Haptic vibration in the band informs the user as to how close or far away the obstacles are located.

Sunu Band helps the visually impaired explore and safely navigate unfamiliar places with several unique features:
• Haptic compass
• Place finder/explorer
• GPS navigation app
• Smartwatch tells time with vibrations
• Mobile app includes discreet vibration alarms
• Sensor based activity tracker

Sunu Band helps the visually impaired to create a mental map of the world around them, something that is not available through the white cane or a guide dog. For example, Sunu Band can help a blind or low vision individual to find a wallet or other object that has been dropped on the floor. It creates an additional layer of safety while navigating vast outdoor spaces.

“We are thrilled to distribute this device that revolutionizes mobility and orientation for the visually impaired,” said Bari Azman, LVS Vice President Marketing and Technology. “We are always seeking intelligent devices that give the visually impaired more detailed information about their surroundings in real time. We want to expand independence and add another tool to the white canes, guard dogs and apps that already provide important support. The most important goal is to allow the visually impaired to navigate the world without hesitation.”
