Introducing NuEyes Smartglasses- A True Game Changer for Low Vision

We are excited to announce that we now offer our patients one of the newest, most advanced wearable technologies on the market today – NuEyes featuring ODG smartglasses. NuEyes offer magnification up to 12x, voice recognition technology and Bluetooth control. They offer contrast enhancement of print and can be customized with prescription lenses.

Understandably, NuEyes has been met with a resounding cheer across the United States. Even the usually staid Bloomberg Business Week covered the announcement of the new technology with an article entitled “NuEyes’ Visionary Design Helps Restore Sight”. This advancement in sight enhancing technology is the future right here and now and it’s worthy of a standing ovation. Here’s why.

NuEyes is a small, compact, yet very powerful device that looks like, and is worn as, eyeglasses. It is exclusively designed for individuals suffering from low vision and offers extreme magnification at levels of 12x – levels that were previously available only through large, clunky desktop machines. NuEyes have voice recognition technology built into them for control as well as manual controls on the glasses themselves. A wireless Bluetooth controller is also included in the technology and it can be worn on a finger to control the glasses.

This technology means that people suffering from Macular Degeneration, Stargardt’s Disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and other visual impairments can experience the joys of improved sight, including seeing the faces of loved ones and enjoying the things they love. A 95 year-old woman told Fast Company how NuEyes would help her enjoy her greatest passion.

“She just wanted to do something she hadn’t been able to do for years because of her low vision- play the piano. That was the most important thing to her. She was also desperate to look at art again, and the glasses will allow her to do both those things. She’s just so excited to get these (glasses). The first thing she’s going to do is go to the Getty museum, in Los Angeles, to see art she has never been able to actually see.”
NuEyes is actually a combination of custom software and smart glasses. A camera on the front of the blacked-out glasses acts as eyes. It captures images and projects them on the lenses. As Bloomberg reported, “A speech-recognition feature lets wearers use voice commands to improve the image projected through the lenses to best remedy their particular condition. Earbuds let users listen to a text reader or other media via a Bluetooth-connected device.” The NuEyes device weight only 125 grams, less than an iPhone 6 according to Yahoo! Finance.
The future holds numerous uses for NuEyes, including Text to Speech capability in which the device will read documents to the wearer, and the ability to stream TV and movies directly to the glasses via a Wi-Fi connection. However, right now we are most excited about NuEye’s ability to improve low vision. Every day we work with patients who have been told that nothing more can be done to enhance their vision. We refuse to accept that and thankfully neither do the amazing entrepreneurs, scientists and technology geniuses behind inventions like NuEyes.

We are featuring NuEyes smartglasses at our Low Vision Technology Fair on Tuesday, February 21st, 2017. Limited space is available so if you are interested in trying NuEyes reserve your space today. If you are interested in setting up a demonstration appointment at our offices, simply complete the form on our website and one or our technicians will review it and call you to confirm your appointment.

We have always said that the future holds exciting developments for low vision and NuEyes is proof positive that that is true. We are proud to offer this technology to our patients and we look forward to showing it to you.
