Low Vision Glasses

People with low vision due to retinal conditions like macular degeneration often complain that their ordinary and routine eye glasses aren’t working well as they did before, even with the perfect number and type of lens as per their eyes refractive error. It’s because the issue is not with the refraction of light rays entering the eyes anymore, the issue is with the cells and layer that interprets those light rays entering the eye.

Low Vision Glasses

Commonly used eyeglasses can usually correct refractive errors only such as nearsightedness and farsightedness. However ordinary glasses can’t solve the blind spots and other visual disturbances caused due to retinal damage such as macular degeneration. Specially designed low vision glasses, magnifiers and other such devices are helpful in letting the patients lead routine life normally.

Note that one size or configuration of low vision glasses doesn’t fit everyone with such symptoms. They’re specially designed for each individual person and their specific needs due to their low vision issues. Get an advise from a doctor who specializes in low vision cases.

Reading and Close Up Low Vision Glasses

These glasses provide high magnification to reduce the blind spots in near vision field. They’re helpful while using computer, reading, writing, playing cards, etc.

Special lenses used in these glasses have special coatings and tints that help in light transmission due to anti-reflective surface and also reduce glare and enhance contrast.

The prism based low vision glasses might not be easily adjustable initially as they don’t work and create the image like the regular glasses, however with time and practice the patients get comfortable on using them.

Microscope low vision glasses are double lens systems that combine the patient’s eyeglass prescription with the amount of magnification needed.   The amount of magnification depends upon the level of remaining vision and the size of the material to be seen. These customized optical systems require a two lenses piggybacked to reduce the blur and aberrations caused by high powered lenses.   They generally require a close working distance and are usually used with one eye.

Outdoor and distant low vision glasses

These glasses include binoculars and telescopes mounted on the glass lenses. They’re helpful for watching television, theatre, outdoor activities and even driving.

Telescope low vision glasses have miniature binoculars inserted into eyeglasses.  A patient’s prescription as well as the highest quality optics must be used in the system for maximum clarity.   Telescope low vision glasses can be for one eye (monocular) or two eyes (binocular).   The telescope can be mounted in various positions in the glasses.

These customized optical systems are not available at all doctors’ offices. Only true low vision providers, who specialize in low vision glasses, should be consulted for the condition to have the best expert advice for your specific case.
